The Andrews Sisters’ performance of Sholom Secunda’s “Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen (Means You’re Grand)” is a prime example of Tin-Pan Alley songs catering to the needs of a shaky and nervous America. The song is light, and whimsical, following a simple AAB form and the singing is pure and, although at times the lyrics contain foreign words, it is very clear. During the verses the singers are backed by a rhythmic beat and the light sounds of a wind instrument, perhaps a clarinet, that add to the purity and light-hearted feel of the track. During the chorus, the voices are reinforced with a bassy sound, perhaps from a trombone. Between the phrases, saxophones punctuate the recording, adding what resembles a joyous shout to the romantic, happy-go-lucky melody. Every instrument in the arrangement reinforces the fanciful lyrical content, which is essentially a confession of love, repeated in various languages and their subsequent translations: a love-struck kind of silly happiness that becomes infectious with the dance provoking melody.
